Safety Tips when working with Electricity
- LOCKOUT/TAGOUT: Always find the breaker in the breaker panel that controls the circuit you plan to work on. If someone else is working in the area and could re-energize that circuit, lock it out with breaker locks. If you do not have them, write a note and fasten it to the breaker to prevent someone from accidentally re-energizing the circuit.
- EXTENSION CORDS: Examine extension cords for broken wires and poor connections at the plug-ins. Never cut the ground plug off. Plugging more than two extension cords together may cause heating problems and voltage losses.
- OVERLOADING BREAKERS: The breakers in the breaker panel are rated at certain amperages. These amperages should not be exceeded. If a breaker continues to trip or open, it is being overloaded. Re-arrange the load (equipment) onto different circuits to help distribute the loads. Fully loaded circuits can cause heat build up that could melt the wiring in the circuit.
- EQUIPMENT REPAIRS: Always unplug electrical equipment before proceeding with repairs. Accidental startup or electrical arcing could occur if the electrical source is not removed.
- TESTING FOR ELECTRICITY: Use a volt meter to test an electrical circuit if you are not sure if it is "hot". Do not use your fingers or a screwdriver to do this check, 120 volts can be just as deadly as 480 volts, don’t take the chance.
Safe-Home Checklist
- Post emergency numbers by every phone. Numbers must be large and clear enough to been seen from a distance.
- Keep a first aid kit handy; know how to use it.
- Install smoke detectors and all-purpose fire extinguishers. Check them monthly.
- Store flammable materials away from the furnace, fireplace, and other heat sources. Never leave an open flame burning unattended - even for a minute.
- Use flame-retardant curtains and bedding.
- Don't let anyone smoke in bed.
- Have your heating system checked and cleaned by a qualified contractor yearly.
- Inspect electrical equipment regularly. Replace frayed or cracked electrical cords and broken sockets and plugs. Make sure electrical appliances are properly grounded.
- Lock up all drugs and hazardous materials out of children's sight.
- Keep stairs, sidewalks, and hallways well lit and clear of clutter.
